Later, after the sangria is gone, the bill is paid, and we’ve parted ways with Shireen, Theo stands above me on the L train back to Brooklyn. Ever the gentleman, he let me take the sole remaining open seat. We’re deep underground, zipping below the East River. He’s talking about something Shireen mentioned at dinner, but I’m having trouble focusing on what he’s saying. Across from me, a couple sits side by side with their hands interlaced in her lap. She rests her head on his shoulder, and he absentmindedly fiddles with the rip in the knee of her jeans, like she’s a continuation of himself. They look intertwined and at peace. I miss that. I want that.

If dinner with Shireen and Theo was intended to give me clarity about my relationship, then in that regard, it was a success. I know now that I want him to meet my family soon. Maybe the more he sees of my life, the more he’ll truly see me. I can’t let Shireen’s comments make me shrink away from Theo. If anything, I have to do the opposite.

“Hey, you know Rosh Hashanah’s coming up? My family is getting together. You could come. Everyone wants to meet you.”

He pauses and gives me a curious look. “Your mom and stepdad?”

“And my grandma, plus Rae and Max, and Pops and Rocco.”

“Everyone—wow.”

Mika’s comments from the bar echo in my head. Maybe asking him to meet my family is asking for too much.

“But if you’re not ready, you don’t have to—”

But he presses a single finger to my lips, warmth already bubbling up in his voice.

“Edie, I’d love to. When is it?”
